Wood wheel clocks with glass bells

Here are some early all wood clocks from the 1700’s with cow tail-pendulum and glass bells. Also one of my flute clock playing a tune.

Note: the Holzerader clocks have their original weights even the glass weights along with the glass bells which is super rare having to survive close to 246 years!

Beautiful! Any chance of a video to see it/hear it playing?

Replacing the old worn out strike side rope

The clock has a unique arrangement for the weight and movement drive. The rope actually loops though the movement which allows for it to be much longer than if it was just attached to a weight and run over the drive pulley.

By creating a loop in the drive rope it is almost twice at long which cuts down on the amount of times you have to wind the clock. One more thing I discovered is that the clock plays its tune every four hours rather than on the hour as must clocks do.

Very old rope

Restoration of 26 pipe organ clock movement is complete for now

I have gone though the music section on the clock and it is for now “in the winter” playing as it should. Come spring time when the humidity increases I will do some final adjustments to the pipes. I have learned over the many years of working on these wood musical clocks that winter and the dryness is not your friend when it comes to these clocks

amazing clock, but you need to look at the air leak - the video shows a rather poor sealing of the musical component - also examine each flute for normal tonality. And tune through the tuner. I know it's not easy but I'm sure you can handle it !

My next project 😳

This flute clock in a tote was dropped off to me to sort out ouch 😣 I’m planning to start on it after I sort out the 26 flute clock with automation first. I have spent three days on it so far and have it playing and the automation is working again but it is playing low and not up to snuff yet.

The fellow who asked me to assemble the flute clock in a tote is looking sell it after I get it assembled. It will need quite a bit of work to get it playing again but that will be the next owners challenge.

My new winter project😊

I just acquired this rare rope drive 26 pipe organ clock (circa 1800’s) with two automated birds. The birds move back and forth while moving their beaks to the music. I willl be sending the front face to Vlastimil Poborsky “Pobo” the restoration artist to be restored. He has restored several front dial faces for me before and has done excellent work.

In the meantime I’m restoring the clock movement and automation. I will post progress on the forum as I move through the process.

I will be fabricating a wall bracket for the movement and will not be using the clock case as I have done in the past.
